| Spartanburg County lies at the foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains. From many locations you can "look to the Hills" and view one
of God's majestic creations. Within a short driving distance you can
fish, walk the Appalachian Trail, or enjoy the sandy shores of the Atlantic
Ocean. Spartanburg county itself has very good recreation facilities for
all members of the family from soccer fields to golf courses to lakes.
Culturally, the newly renovated Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, an open-air
amphitheater, and other art centers offer a variety of venues to showcase the
arts in our community. In any given season, you can find shows playing,
operas being performed, and art exhibits being displayed. On tap for the
future is a new performing arts complex to be located in downtown Spartanburg,
which will combine the Art Center with the Little Theater and other
organizations. Each year Spartanburg celebrates the 4th of July with a
huge extravaganza known as "Red, White, and Boom" and displays our cultural
diversity in the international Festival.

Education is a high priority for the people of Spartanburg. The public
school system is divided into 64 accredited schools within seven school
districts. There are also a number of private schools within our
county such as the Spartanburg Day School and the Oakbrook School. Higher
education is provided by Wofford College, the University of South Carolina at
Spartanburg, Converse College, Spartanburg Technical College, Spartanburg
Methodist College and Sherman College of Chiropractics. Preschool
education is based primarily in the churches, with our own St. Mathew's
Preschool leading the way.

In front of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce building is a
golden globe flanked by flagpoles representing twelve of the countries that
call Spartanburg home. As these flags fly behind the American and South
Carolina flags, people are called to realize that though our county seems to
still have some of the old quiet ways, we truly are a part of the whole of
God's world.
