Why We Came to St. Matthew’s and Why We Stay

As a community of faith, we consider our time spent together in worship to be of the utmost importance.  Our style of worship is one of the top reasons people give for joining St. Matthew’s and one of the most important reasons for staying.

We celebrate Holy Eucharist, Rite II, at two services on Sunday morning.  The 9:00 a.m. liturgy is a contemporary service with music provided by our praise and worship team.  The 11:15 a.m. service is a more traditional choral service with music provided by the adult choir.  We often incorporate instrumental offerings into our worship.  Nursery services are available at both services.

Lay participation is an important element of our worship life; everyone is involved.  In addition to our choir - acolytes, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, greeters, alms counters, and the altar guild support Sunday worship.  A team of Lay Eucharistic Visitors takes Eucharist to members who are unable to attend Sunday worship.

On Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., we offer a contemporary service of prayer and healing.  This service is based on Night Prayer from the New Zealand Prayer Book and includes Holy Eucharist, and the laying on of hands and anointing for healing.  The homily is a reflection by a layperson on the Gospel reading for the day and Psalm 150, our contemporary praise and worship group, provides the music.

Worship at St. Matthew’s represents the best of the “broad church” tradition.  The Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal are the foundation and spirit of that tradition.  The worship team, both clergy and laypersons, are focused on a liturgy that is serious, uplifting and spirit-filled.  But we also appreciate a worship atmosphere that is not rigid.  Our youth have reminded us that our relaxed approach makes St. Matthew’s a comfortable place for them and for their visiting friends.  We are “kid friendly”.  Many a family with rambunctious preschoolers has found a church home at St. Matthew’s!
